German Shorthaired Pointers are bred to strict rules and undergo complex hunting trials. They must be able to complete a very wide range of hunting tasks to an advanced age. Firm, balanced, dependable and restrained, they must never be nervous, timid or aggressive.
Dry, well defined, neither too long nor too heavy, strength and length commensurate with sex and build.
Straight, slightly sloping topline, defined withers, firm, very muscular back, short, broad, muscular loins.
Brown without markings or with small white or flecked markings on chest and legs; dark brown roan or light brown roan with brown head, brown patches or specks; black with the same nuances as the brown or brown roan.
Set high and broad, medium length, hanging flat without twisting, close to the head.
Reaching the hock, carried straight or slightly saber fashion.
Short, dense, dry, hard to the touch.
Historically, German Shorthaired Pointers were used in Mediterranean regions to assist in the hunting of game birds. The breed was introduced to the courts of Germany via France, Spain and Flanders, where their most important quality was pointing.These harmoniously proportioned dogs exude power, stamina and speed.
