Petit Basset Griffon Vendeens are brave and enthusiastic hunters that love to work in the bramble and scrub. They have the character of a docile little dog, but are always willing and passionate.
Slightly domed skull, not very long, not too broad, well chiseled under the eyes.
Straight back, well supported topline, muscular loins, very muscular, fairly broad croup, not too broad a chest.
Black with white spotting, black with tan markings, black with sandy markings, fawn with white spotting, fawn with black mantle and white spotting, fawn with black overlay, sandy with black overlay with or without white spotting.
Supple, narrow, fine, covered with long hairs, ending in a slight oval, turned inward, not reaching the end of the muzzle.
Set high, fairly thick at the base, tapering evenly to the tip, rather short, carried saber-fashion.
Harsh, not too long, never silky or woolly.
The great authority on French hounds, Paul Daubigné, has said of the breed: “It is no longer a Petit Vendéen that has simply undergone a reduction in height, but a Petit Basset harmoniously reduced in all of its proportions and volume, naturally endowed with all the moral qualities predisposing a passion for hunting.”
A demon in the fields, an angel in the home, this passionate hunter needs to be trained to obey from a very early age. They are ideal over medium-sized areas, especially when hunting rabbits with the gun, although other game are just as vulnerable.
