Used for hunting with a gun and sometimes for coursing big game, Grand Bleu de Gascognes are also sometimes used to hunt hares. They generally hunt in packs, for which they have a highly developed instinct, although these industrious dogs can work alone as a tracking hound. They have a very fine nose and a resonant voice. Calm, they have no problem following commands.

A contemporary of the Bloodhound, this very old breed of dogs were used in packs to hunt wolves, bears and wild boars in the 14th century by the Count of Foix. Bleu de Gascognes are found over much of south and southeast France, especially Gascogny, from which they take their name.
