Short-legged Basset Hounds are substantial, well proportioned, distinguished dogs. A certain amount of loose skin is desirable. In 1989, the British standard was recognized by the F.C.I. replacing the American standard, which was until then, the benchmark. The scenthound family is a large one, but Basset Hounds are indisputably the most widespread and the most popular around the world today. They are also the heaviest and the most powerful, classified as a large dog, despite their short legs.

Contemporary Basset Hounds have their origins in French scenthounds imported into the U.K. As such, they share as common ancestor what is now recognized as the Bloodhound.
