Xoloitzcuintles are silent, tranquil dogs of cheerful, attentive disposition. Alert and distrustful of strangers, they make good watchdogs and wonderful companions.
Broad, strong, but very elegant skull.
Slightly longer than the height at the withers, strong build.
Solid dark colors preferred, ranging from black, blackish gray, slate gray and dark gray to reddish, liver, bronze and blonde.
Long, large, expressive, very elegant, delicately textured.
Long and thin, some tuffs of hair.
Completely hairless on the body, but with some short, coarse, close hairs on the forehead and neck.
Xolos go way back. They were regarded by the Aztecs as envoys from the god Xolotl, which is almost certainly where the name comes from. They had the task of accompanying the souls of the dead to the underworld. The first thing that strikes you about these very attractive dogs is the almost total lack of hair to cover their smooth, soft skin. They have a well proportioned body, broad chest, spacious ribcage, and long legs and tail.
