Courageous and energetic, but calm and impassive, too, Swedish Elkhounds are large Spitz-type dogs with rectangular bodies and pure lines. These strong, solidly built dogs are of good stature and agile, without ever giving the impression of being too heavy.
Fairly long, pure lines, relatively broad between the ears.
Powerful, pure lines, slightly longer than the height at the withers.
Light and dark gray.
Set high, pointed, perfectly erect and attentive.
Set high, medium length, even thickness.
Fairly close topcoat without being flat. Short, soft undercoat of light gray, preferably cream.
Swedish Elkhounds were only recognized as a separate breed in 1946, despite belonging to an ancient type that has been found in north-central Sweden – particularly the province of Jämtland – ever since people started colonizing the region. However, Jämthunds were traditionally regarded as the same breed as the smaller Norwegian Elkhound.
